A Four-Day Event in Africa
Note: Our clients value their privacy and hire Gezelle for our expert execution as well as our discretion. To respect their wishes, we will not disclose any identifying details in these case studies.
Setting: Dakar, Senegal - West Africa
The Atlantic coast stretches for miles. Fishing boats painted in brilliant yellows, blues, and reds bob up and down in the harbour. Baobab trees stand guard over dusty roads that wind through markets filled with hand-dyed fabrics and the scent of fresh seafood grilling over charcoal. The air is alive with the sounds of French and Wolof, while music spills from doorways, creating a warmth that goes beyond the climate. This is West Africa, where every meal is a celebration, and hospitality is a way of life.
The ask: Senior management offsite
Fifty to sixty guests, all C-suite executives, celebrating a major company win and engaging in some strategic planning. The brief was clear: to create an experience that reflected the location and supported the local community, and kept their senior employees engaged and team-building across 4 days.
This was a bespoke event - everything was organised and customised to the client, which meant we were arranging:
- Multiple independent venues in different parts of the city
- A four-day schedule with no room for delays or miscommunication
- Cultural and dietary requirements for guests from fifteen different countries
- Language barriers (the local working language was French)
- Logistics involving transit/buses, multiple meal services, entertainment, and activities
- A commitment to support local businesses rather than defaulting to corporate suppliers
By the numbers :
4 days, 60 guests, 15 nationalities
21 local businesses supported
85% of the budget spent locally
10 venues across the city
0 missed timings / 0 major incidents
What we did
We worked with a local events organiser to design an itinerary that spread impact across the community, not just the 5-star hotel. Every restaurant, event space, and activity outside the hotel was either independently owned or run by Senegalese citizens.
The activities celebrated - not imitated - local culture. We organised a traditional fishing boat painting session as a team-building exercise, with guests from around fifteen countries adding elements from their own backgrounds to the design. There was a scavenger hunt through town focused on history and art. And a closing night event at one of the city’s most historic landmarks.
The logistics were complex. We were moving people around a city using buses, coordinating across multiple sites, and running everything in a second language with the help of a translator. But the zoning - a key element of our strategy here at Gezelle - made it work.
We used three distinct areas throughout the final evening, the celebration of the hard work of these employees. Guests arrived on the roof for canapés and cocktails at sunset. Then we moved into a covered space for a buffet dinner, with most dishes served to maintain the flow. As the meal finished, entertainment began: acoustic music to start, followed by a cultural show with live drumming, a band that had performed during the show, and finally a DJ to round out the night. Each transition built energy without feeling forced - and best of all, we were able to create an event with 100% local suppliers/vendors.
Result
The event ran smoothly across four days. Guests left with an experience rooted in the place they visited, not a corporate event that could have happened anywhere. The local businesses we partnered with benefited directly from the spend, and we demonstrated that complex, multi-site events can be pulled off with proper planning and local partnerships. There was an equal blend of work/strategy time and bonding time - as well as off/down time for people to regroup and enjoy the city for themselves. The post-event client feedback was overwhelmingly positive - the most seamless offsite they had in their 10+ years of existence.
Why it worked
Rather than importing a Western event model into Africa, we worked with individuals who were familiar with the city, understood its culture, and had established relationships with the businesses we required. Local knowledge isn't optional for events like this - it is what makes them successful.
If you're planning an event that requires seamless integration across cultures, languages, and logistics, we'd be happy to discuss how we can help make it a success. Reach out to us at hello@gezelle.co.
